report on aids for the disabled' said, "In theory wheel chairs are prescribed by consultants, but in practice few consultants have studied this problem adequately and the responsibility is often passed on to social workers or appliance clerks who have not been trained to do this work. Part of the fault stems from gaps in the doctor's education, particularly at a postgraduate level, but the situation could be improved by delegating responsibility to physiotherapists or occupational therapists specially trained to assess patients and their wheel-chair needs." Facial nerve paralysis after impacted lower third molar surgery: a literature review and case report.

Facial nerve paralysis (FNP) is the most common cranial nerve disorders and it results in a characteristic facial distortion that is determined in part by the nerves branches involved. With multiples etiologies, these included trauma, tumor formation, idiopathic conditions, cerebral infarct, pseudobulbar palsy and viruses. P148: Facial Nerve Paralysis Secondary to Odontogenic Infection

Peripheral facial nerve paralysis is the most common form of motor cranial neuropathy. Several factors can cause Bell’s palsy such as vascular ischemia, intracranial lesions, iatrogenic damage, etc. Treatment relies on diagnosing the causing factor, varying from steroids to surgical techniques. Since there has been but few reports of facial nerve paralysis caused by dental infection, odon...

Changes of the cell bodies in the facial nucleus after facial nerve block.

Facial nerve blocks were produced in four monkeys by insertion of a needle into the facial nerve trunk. The sequential changes of nerve cells in the facial nucleus were investigated 4 days, and 2 and 7 months later. Although the facial paralysis recovered in 2 months, considerable changes of cell bodies in the facial nucleus were still obvious which recovered completely only after 7 months. It ...

Contralateral facial nerve palsy following mandibular second molar removal: is there co-relation or just coincidence?

Peripheral facial nerve palsy (FNP) is the most common cranial nerves neuropathy. It is very rare during dental treatment. Classically, it begins immediately after the injection of local anaesthetic into the region of inferior dental foramen and it's homolateral to the injection. Recovery takes a few hours, normally as long the anaesthetic lasts. The authors present a 44-year-old patient who pr...

Fluctuating and intermittent facial weakness following a local anaesthetic.

Considering the extensive use of local anaesthetics, especially in dental anaesthesia, it is surprising that injury to peripheral nerves, as a result of the injection, appears to be rare. During local anaesthesia of the maxillary nerve territory it is not uncommon for there to be a little weakness of the cheek and lip muscles, presumably due to spread of local anaesthesia into the proximity of ...
